How are You Dreaming Big for 2020?

January 28, 2020 By Stanton Lanier 8 Comments

As you read enjoy streaming Wherever You Go from the album Open Spaces (or listen on your favorite music service).

How are you Dreaming Big for 2020?

I want to Dream Big for this year. How about you? I want to be confident instead of hesitant, to have faith instead of unbelief, and to have an abundance mentality instead of scarcity mindset. Below are three actions I plan to practice while Dreaming Big for 2020.

1. Live Fully in the Present. Remember the past. Be mindful of the future. Live in the present. These wise words from a friend have been part of my Dreaming Big for a long time. The past year included many amazing blessings, along with some challenging trials. The future seems bright, but I can be afraid of what is uncertain and out of my control. My primary focus should be the gift of life today, and living fully in each present moment. I also need to rely on the promise “Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed. I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you with my victorious right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

2. Ask Boldly. I have found if I approach asking boldly from a posture of “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4), then my Big Dreams will better align with God’s Big Dreams for me. He is the Dream Giver, the Creator (with capital letters). I am a dreamer and creator (with lower case letters), asking God boldly to accomplish the Big Dreams He wants to come true this year in my life. This fills me with awe and wonder because I only know a small portion of what is in store. As I live fully in the present, and ask boldly, I remember the past with thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness in doing “immeasurably more than all I ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within me” (Ephesians 3:20). I look expectantly to the future believing “God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish” (Philippians 1:6).

3. Move Forward by Faith. When I lean into listening for God’s voice—His gentle whisper—He guides me forward by faith. This can be a sense of the Holy Spirit nudging me toward my next step of obedience, God “speaking” to me through His Word or answers to prayer, or through acting on invitations from others with discernment. Moving forward can appear the opposite when the Holy Spirit checks my spirit to slow down or stop, when God is quiet and can seem distant during a season of waiting for clarity with a next step, or when people are offering me “good ideas” which are not “God’s best” plans. These tensions are why Dreaming Big requires faith and drawing near to God. I can move forward by faith, drawing strength from Hebrews 11:6 (without faith it is impossible to please God), and James 4:8 (Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you).

Which of these can you put into practice to energize your Dreaming Big for 2020?

Pursuing Your Passions, Part 1 ~ by Stanton Lanier (Copyright 2012, not to be re-published without permission)

In 1994, at the age of 30, I surrendered my career life to God and asked Him to show me what He wanted me to do. After getting an MBA and spending five years in consulting and sales, the time had come to trust God 100% instead of asking Him to join me in what I was doing.

Picture 3

In 1995, God called me to Ronald Blue & Co. to become a financial planner. It was the clearest sense of direction I had experienced in my life. So clear, in fact, that I thought the greatest blessing was that I had found my life calling. It was a joy and a privilege to wake up each day and give financial counsel to clients based on a biblical perspective.

Working with clients on financial and life stewardship caused me to ask myself the same questions I would often discuss with clients. How much is enough? What are your passions? As I reflected, my heart was stirred to revive a lifelong passion I had for playing the piano and writing songs. “Baby steps” of faith led me to a place where God inspired me to compose instrumental melodies to help people slow down and experience His peace. The next year, I released my first CD and gave it away to friends, clients and co-workers. More and more people began to enjoy and share my music and two more albums followed.

Below are the first two steps that had a powerful impact on my faith journey. I hope they inspire and encourage you to pursue your passions.

1. Invest. In 1999 I had a stirring in my heart that I was supposed to invest in a keyboard and computer to record some old songs I had written in high school. God’s voice just would not go away on this, so I gathered information for six months, waited upon the Lord, and took action steps to obey and invest. Following this, God revealed a new idea to create solo piano from scripture to bring peace to the soul. “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).

2. Invigorate. What is it that invigorates you (i.e. refreshes, revitalizes, stimulates, enlivens, energizes, rejuvenates, animates, strengthens, livens you up)? Make sure to integrate whatever “it” is into your life, even if this means just a few minutes each day or a few hours each week. Make the most of life right now where you are. “I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free” (Psalm 119:32).

Are you hearing God’s still small voice telling you to invest in some way? What invigorates you?

How to Know When to Go, or Wait

How do you know when to go, and when to wait?

It seems we all have this longing to know, should I go or should I wait? This could be a decision in the moment you are facing right now, or more of a long arch, life purpose decision such as a career change or sense of calling in your heart. I have been researching and studying answers to this question for a long time. Growing in making the “best” decision versus a “good” or “better” choice takes time, and is a lifelong pursuit.

The photo below is from a July mountain hike in British Columbia, which inspired today’s post. Do you see the path as where you are headed or where you have been? Do you notice the beauty along the way? I believe the ideas below will encourage you and help you with your “how to know when to go” decisions…

One resource that has really helped me with the question “Should I go or should I wait?” is the daily devotional My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers. Below are two key highlights from the March 20th devotion titled “Friendship with God.”

THE DELIGHTS OF HIS FRIENDSHIP — Go Unless God Says Wait
It is possible to be growing in your friendship with God, to be “so intimately in touch with God, that you never need to ask Him to show you His will. When you have a right-standing relationship with God you have a life of freedom, liberty, and delight; you are God’s will. All of your common sense decisions are His will for you, unless you sense a feeling of restraint brought on by a check in your spirit. We are free to make decisions in the light of a perfect and delightful friendship with God, knowing that if our decisions are wrong He will lovingly produce that sense of restraint. Once He does, you must stop immediately.” This approach has transformed my decision making and faith journey. “Go unless God says wait (unless He checks my spirit)” is very different than “wait until God says clearly says go,” which is what I would prefer, and you probably would too.

THE DIFFICULTIES OF HIS FRIENDSHIP — Believe as You Go
“Whenever we stop short of our true desire in prayer and say, ‘Well I don’t know, maybe the is not God’s will,’ then we still have another level to go. Think of the last thing you prayed about — were you devoted to your desire or to God? The reason for asking is so you may get to know God better.” This has helped me to keep believing anything is possible with God, when He has asked me to “obey and go” regarding a specific direction or special project. Remember where you have been, and be grateful for God’s faithfulness. Focus on where you are headed, and have faith God will show the way.

How can Oswald Chambers’ words help you to know when to go, or wait?

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4

The Secret to a 2nd Half of Desire and Delight

July 2, 2014 By Stanton Lanier 4 Comments

Are your desires coming true in 2014?

It’s a matter of perspective, right? Sometimes I question, “Are my motives pure?” Sometimes I wonder, “Am I desiring the right things, the best things?” Several years ago an ancient scripture verse became like a compass, a “true north,” for these kinds of questions around desire.

DSC06718_5_3 2

My perspective began shifting from achieving to receiving, and from striving to surrendering. One of the ways I like to express this is, “I want to line my ‘push’ up with God’s ‘pull.’” It’s not always easy — or realistic — to be joyful and happy, but Delight helps me remember to focus on the good news in life (rather than the bad), as well as the good I can do. I love John Eldredge’s thought in his book Epic that life is an adventure to live rather than a problem to solve. This piano melody also resonates with this idea.

I believe great blessings and surprises await us in the second half of 2014. The secret is to align our heart’s desires and delights with God’s grace and goodness, and to ask for His guidance. When I feel alone or wonder if some desire will come true, God faithfully provides as I surrender results to Him.

What desire or adventure in your heart seems God-sized and impossible without His help?

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4

“Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.” — Psalm 119:35
