REMNANT OF LIGHT (Obadiah 21)
Remnant of Light is a new solo piano composition inspired by Obadiah, the shortest book in the Old Testament. Obadiah only has one chapter with twenty-one verses. His assignment was to speak God’s word of judgment against the Edomites, the descendants of Esau, who were enemies of God’s covenant people the Israelites. The only glimmer of hope is in the final verse which speaks of the remnant of the saved, who are instructed to rule justly and fairly as they represent the God of heaven to the world around them 586 years before Christ.
The title Remnant of Light attempts to capture the essence of this ray of light which points toward God’s eternal Kingdom of Light. Through Christ, He forever rules and reigns as a righteous judge. If we believe by faith the bold and stunning truth that not one of us deserves to be saved, but for those of us who receive and embrace Jesus’ promise of forgiveness for our sins, we can turn to Him in faith and repentance, and escape God’s wrath the Edomites brought on themselves by pridefully and deliberately rejecting Him.
How can a solo piece capture all of this? It cannot. Yet, the music can offer peace and hope to our hearts as we slow down and rest in Christ in the midst of a world filled with unrest and hopelessness. My composing has some improvisational writing with the introduction, verse variations, and ending offering several different glimmers of light. Each section supports the primary theme expressing the assurance of hope we have in Christ, our ultimate light and hope.
How does Remnant of Light speak to you?
