Singing Over You

Singing Over You begins with a “metronome like” single note beat to represent the routine of daily life. This rhythm is joined by a gentle melody, which symbolizes the steady plod as we progress through each day. For me, some days are filled with peace, hope, and beauty, while others have strong doses of fear, uncertainty, and frustration. This tension in every day life is expressed through the major and minor melodies and harmonies on the piano, boy choir, strings, cello and French horn. The musical conversation becomes both beautiful and mysterious, just like life — days filled with beauty, wonder, adventure, victories, struggles, bright days, and darker days, all needing God’s peace, hope, grace and mercy.

The message in this instrumental song is that God is always with us, always. Not just some of the time, all of the time, each and every day. Some days I have to make an effort to remember this. By faith He is inside me, He takes delight in me, He soothes me with His love (He even surrounds me with His love as I trust in Him — Psalm 32:10), and He is singing over me His song of praise. I need God to continually remind me to embrace the truths of His Word in Zephaniah 3:17. Even though my days and attitude are inconsistent, the Lord is unchanging and always faithful in watching over me, in singing over me His song for my life, which is much more beautiful than I may realize.

Musically, the major key begins to be overlayed by its relative minor key, creating beauty and tenderness in the underlying chords. The piano notes begin to “sing” the chorus inspired by the verse “He will sing over you,” which is interwoven into the song as it moves along. Eventually this “singing over you” chorus is literally on top of and singing over the “steady plod” theme. God is singing over each of one of us His beautiful, one-of-a-kind melody just for our life, even when we don’t hear it or are not aware of it. He knows us through and through — everything about us — and we are unable to flee His presence (Psalm 139).

When by faith we receive His gift of salvation through His Son (John 3:16), confess with our mouth “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in our heart God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9), we can know we have eternal life (1 John 5:13). As I seek God, investigate His Word, and invest time with Him, I become more intimate with Him as my Father. I am more aware of God singing His song for me over my life, and I can hear it more clearly and frequently. These are some of the underlying thoughts embodied in my composition of Singing Over You. It is both beautiful and mysterious that the Creator of the universe, the One who breathes the breath of life, the One who saves, also knows me so personally. He delights in me and soothes me with His love.

How does Singing Over You speak to you?

Zephaniah 3:17

Yahweh, your God, is inside you. He is the Warrior-Savior who takes such delight in you that it will make him leap for joy and shout with great gladness. Yes, he will soothe you with his love. He will sing over you his song of praise. (The Passion Translation)

The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. (ESV)
